California Dreaming

With spring here, we all need to choose carefully our dessert and wine. Why you ask? Answer:  to fit into that bathing suit for summer and look somewhat good!

Well, I have three perfect pairings, since I need to have a touch of sweetness each day. With all wines from California from established wineries, each with different varietals, you can bet on any of the following for a sure win!

Andrew and Laurel Quady have been producing sweet and fortified wines at their winery in Madera, CA since 1972. Along with winemaker, Michael Blaylock, they make Electra, an Orange Muscat wine with a slight effervescence. It is definitely my choice for a sunny afternoon. Made from 100% Orange Muscat grapes, it is low in alcohol (only 4%) with a fragrant nose. It is light, fresh and soft in the mouth with citrus tastes of orange and lemon and fulfills my desire for that oh so sweet, but delicate wine. I find myself craving a little more when my glass is empty. Try pouring it over ripe, fragrant melon, sliced paper thin. HEAVENLY...........................



East of San Francisco in the Livermore Valley is Wente Vineyards, founded 125 years ago. The winemaker, Karl D. Wente, a fifth generation winemaker makes a delicious Late Harvest Riesling (100% Riesling). It is labeled Small Lot - grapes which are hand harvested from vineyard blocks in Arroyo Seco, Monterey and the wine presents pale yellow in color, with a fresh, fruit forward aroma. Flavors of apricot, honey and butterscotch are soft and round in the mouth with a hint of spice. Vanilla Bean Pound Cake with roasted plum ginger compote is a smooth and satisfying finish any time of day.



In beautiful Napa Valley, located in Rutherford, you will find Honig Vineyard & Winery. A Late Harvest Sauvignon Blanc made from 100% Sauvignon Blanc, by winemaker Kristin Belair has fruit harvested from Block One of Honig's sustainable farmed vineyard near the Napa River. With botrytis affecting the grapes, the wine is golden in color with flavors of honey, dried apricots, vanilla and citrus, particularly grapefruit. An Orange Gateau with bruleed pink grapefruit makes a spectacular pairing!
